[REVIEW singapore] by pooh and Elaine Boey

The formidable Jacky Cheung staged two almost sell-out concerts in Singapore on 26th and 27th March 1999 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. He opened the concert at 8.30pm (half an hour after the appointed time) with a huge, non-sentimental bang, Release Yourself. Poised in the middle of the stage and strumming his guitar, the former Mr Nice Guy was a bad-boy punk. His hair was spiky and highlighted in purple. He strutted about with his green shirt billowing around him. His wedding band jiggled proudly on a chain around his neck.

Illuminated by one of the most effective lighting seen recently in the concert here, he was flanked by six back-up vocalists, including three tambourine-waving women. The ground rules for the night were laid down early: "If you want to dance, dance. If you want to clap, clap" Then, Jacky launched into a series of rollicking numbers. In between belting out his fast numbers, he made it a point to introduce to the audience the members of his band and back-up vocalist.

Later, after a furious round of pelvis thrust, he slowed down: "Don't worry, this is still Jacky Cheung." Amid huffs and puffs, he reminded the audience: It's not easy moving like this at my age." Although, it seemed only a few years ago that Singaporeans first saw him croon his famous Farewell Kiss, Jacky declared that he had a much earlier beginning: "I started out in 1985." The Heavenly King did not hesitate to add: "And all this time, I've always been very adaptable, be it in the environment or musical style."

And indeed he had been. Jacky continued to demonstrate more musical styles - blues, a cappella, funk and rock - proving that he is the most versatile of the four Kings. Cantonese songs took centre-stage throughout the concert. Amid requests from the fans, Jacky promised four Mandarin songs during his encore, dropping a hint or two that there is more to look forward to in the later part of the night.

The highlight of the night was definitely when Jacky offered vignettes of his personal life. Dedicating the song, There's Someone, to his wife, May Lo, he confessed to being "irresponsible and bad-tempered" before they were married. The audience were mesmerised by the childhood and courtship photos of Jacky and May as well as the interactive comic depicting their post-marriage life while Jacky delivered the song.

The one-hour encore that soon followed, was probably the longest in Singapore's history. Jacky fulfilled his promise by beginning the encore with four Mandarin hits, including, Farewell Kiss. Thereafter, the audiences selected a number of Cantonese hits from the list he prepared, mostly Jacky's oldies.

Towards the end of the show, he made this promise: " No matter what the demands of the audience are, I will give it. Someday, I might even fly." Well, fly he did not. But full marks to him for trying to all these 14 years.
