Viewing Chinese (Big-5 Code)
[MS Windows | Macintosh | X Window ]

As Joseph's web pages are designed to be viewed in Netscape, the following instructions will apply to Netscape specifically.

MS Windows
If you are running Netscape under Chinese Windows (Big-5 version), you don't have to make any special settings.

If you are reading web pages in CAD LAB of Knowles Building, you can use NJWin Multilingual System only.
Unzip the file by choosing "Install" in the toolbar of Winzip. The programme would run automatically and avoid protection set in Archi CAD LAB. The demo version (NJWIN120.ZIP) can be downloaded from HKU Dept. of Arch ASA server.

If you are using English version of MS Windows 95, you can use NJWin Multilingual System.
Unzip the file by choosing "Install" in the menu of Winzip. The programme would run automatically. The demo version (NJWIN150.ZIP) can be downloaded from UST SunSite FTP server.

Another alternative is to use UW-DBM 4.0 with English version of MS Windows. The demo version (uwcjk40e.zip) can be downloaded from here. For users inside Hong Kong, you can get it from the CUHK FTP server.

Macintosh
You need to run Netscape 1.12 or above with the Chinese Language Kit (CLK) loaded.

Special settings of Netscape to be set under Options -> Preferences -> Fonts and Colors:

For the Encoding: Japanese [Set it first before setting others]

Use the Proportional Font: *Taipei* or some other Chinese fonts

Use the Fixed Font: *Taipei* or some other Chinese fonts

Default Encoding: SJIS

If you run Netscape 2.0 or above with the CLK loaded, you can simply set Language to Traditional Chinese.

If you want freeware/shareware, you can visit the page "Netsurfing in Chinese" which contain detailed information about viewing Chinese in Macintosh.

X Window
You need Mosaic L10N and also Chinese Big5 fonts in the font path of the X-window system. For details about how to get and install Mosaic L10N, you can find the information here.

If you are in Hong Kong, you can get the software from here.

You can also use Netscape 2.0 beta to view the Chinese characters. You can get the software from here if you are in Hong Kong. Otherwise, please try Netscape's ftp site.

Alternatively, you can use cxterm plus the text-based WWW browser lynx. You can get cxterm from here.

If you are in Hong Kong, you can get cxterm from here.
